i can still appreciate the symmetry,
irregularities
yellow lines,
level pavement,
a breeze,
a cloud,
clouds,
the sound of rain across a protective hood,
i don’t mind the moods,
stubbed toes, and hang nails,
the joy of the all is easy enough to find,
as easy as it is to relish the roll
of a complaint or moan off my tongue,
shattering glass across a wall,
snapping a twig,
cursing,
sunlight, a good laugh,
a hot tear, a sad melody,
a bright day, a sweet life.

Red notions
Red doors
Red flags
ready.

i keep learning new ways
to do the same things,
old recipes with new results,
familiar songs with new spins,
i walk different routes to
frequented haunts,
i find novel ways to drive
myself crazy,
i sit, and i look, and i look again,
over and over, learned like the wind.

The mess spilled across my counters is astounding
the kitchen cleaned just yesterday,
and the yesterday before that,
why only hours before there was room,
there was comfort, there was ease,
forever bailing, a ship sinking to the sea,
unthinkable, the speed, steadfast, and quick,
the piling, the plates, the crumbs, the stick,
from my cushions i spy them, and avert my anxious gaze,
add it to the inevitable, add it to my daze.

Is the lesson of school appreciation?
Of the classes that never end?
You see the same children as adults,
the ones that struggled to attend,
classes rinsed unnoticed,
the words wasted just like them,
the thing they never tells us,
is life’s teachings never end,
always another exam,
tests expected, and dropped in,
the recesses few and far between,
breaks that barely seem to begin,
those that love to learn keep reaching,
alarms set eager for again,
pencils, patience, and perspective,
all that’s asked to ascend,
the playground is endless,
only bells that ends us,
after which, we always miss our friends.
